Cal Trask is particularly unhappy young man. He sees himself as a black sheep in the family, and is always competing with his brother Aron, who seems almost perfect in every respect. Aron is also his father's favorite, and Cal desperately wants his father's love and affection. This is the period until the beginning of America's World War I, and these tumultuous times. When his father lost most of its wealth trying to ship refrigerated salads in New York, Cal decides to speculate on the cultivation of beans and make a little wealth, but soon realizes that he can not buy love, nor his father. Cal discovery that his mother was alive - he and Aron said he died - and that the lady leading to the final, tragic results for all three of the men Trask.
